The short answer: in India today, three kinds of helpers work inside WhatsApp. Meta AI is built in and answers questions for free. Kaval is someone you text who takes care of everyday tasks and follows up. And official business accounts handle their own company’s bookings and support. ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot left WhatsApp on 15 January 2026, and ChatGPT has only returned in Europe.
Disclosure: Kaval is our product. We have tried to describe every option, including our own, by what it actually does and doesn’t do.
Why the list got shorter in 2026
In October 2025, Meta changed the terms of the WhatsApp Business Platform, the system outside companies use to run accounts on WhatsApp. The new rules barred general-purpose AI chatbots from 15 January 2026. Business bots that serve their own customers were not affected.
OpenAI said 1-800-ChatGPT would stop working on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026, and Microsoft announced Copilot was leaving too. European regulators pushed back: Italy’s competition authority intervened in December 2025, and the European Commission ordered interim measures in June 2026. ChatGPT returned to WhatsApp in the European Economic Area in July 2026. There has been no official return in India. We explain the full timeline in what happened to ChatGPT on WhatsApp.
What to look for in a WhatsApp AI assistant
Before you pick one, decide what you need it for. The useful questions:
- Does it answer, or does it act? Most assistants answer questions. Fewer will book the appointment, file the complaint or remind you next week.
- Does it follow up? Real tasks take days. A refund, a complaint or a booking needs someone who comes back with updates without being asked.
- Your language. Check it handles Hindi, Tamil, Hinglish or whatever you actually type, including voice notes.
- Does it ask before acting? Anything that spends money or sends something on your behalf should ask you first and pause on every payment.
- Who runs it? Check whose account you are messaging. Verified business accounts show a badge; a random number calling itself “ChatGPT” is not OpenAI.
- Cost. Some are free, some free to start with paid plans. Know which before you rely on it.
Meta AI: best for quick answers and writing help
Meta AI is built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook. You can open a chat with it, or bring it into any chat or group by typing @Meta AI.
- Good at: quick questions, drafting and rewriting messages, translating, summaries, making images. It is free and already on your phone. Meta added Hindi support, including Hindi typed in English letters.
- Not built for: doing things for you outside the chat. It won’t chase your refund, book with a clinic or remember to follow up on Thursday.
- Cost: free.
Kaval: best for getting everyday things done
Kaval is someone you text on WhatsApp who takes things off your plate. You send what you need the way you’d message a friend, and Kaval does the work, asks before it acts for you, and comes back when it’s done, over days if the task takes that long.
- Good at: explaining bills and notices, booking appointments, placing orders, writing and escalating complaints, reminders, research and plans, and checking whether a message, link or photo is a scam. It works in the language you write in, including Tamil, Hindi and Hinglish.
- Different from a chatbot: it follows up on its own, remembers what matters to you, and needs no app, logins or connected accounts. For members, tasks can be handed to a real person on the Kaval team.
- Not built for: tasks that need your passwords or OTPs. Kaval never asks for them, and pauses for you on every payment.
- Cost: free to start. Membership details are on the pricing page.

Official business accounts: best for one company’s own services
Banks, airlines, delivery apps and many government services run their own WhatsApp accounts, often with automated assistants. They are the right place for that company’s own tasks: checking a booking, downloading a statement, tracking an order.
- Good at: account-specific actions only that company can do.
- Not built for: anything outside that company, or taking its side against you in a complaint.
- Check first: look for the verified badge and get the number from the company’s own app or website. Scammers copy business names and logos on WhatsApp; our guide to spotting fake customer support numbers shows how.
ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude: use their own apps
The big general chat apps are not available on WhatsApp in India. They work well in their own apps and websites, for writing, studying, coding and long questions. The trade-off is that you open them and prompt them; they don’t come back to you on WhatsApp with updates. For scam checks specifically, see can ChatGPT tell if a message is a scam.

Stay safe with any WhatsApp assistant
- Never send OTPs, UPI PINs, passwords, full card numbers or Aadhaar numbers to any chatbot, agent or person on WhatsApp.
- Numbers advertised as “ChatGPT on WhatsApp” in India are third-party services, not OpenAI.
- Anything that wants you to pay should show you exactly what you are paying for and wait for your yes.
- If a message from any “assistant” pushes urgency, a link and a payment together, treat it as a scam until proven otherwise. Our WhatsApp scam checker explains the signs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI assistant on WhatsApp in India? It depends on the job. Meta AI is good for quick questions, writing help and images. Kaval takes on tasks like bills, bookings, complaints and reminders and follows up until they’re done. For one company’s own account, use its verified WhatsApp account.
Is ChatGPT available on WhatsApp in India? Not officially. 1-800-ChatGPT stopped working on WhatsApp on 15 January 2026, and OpenAI brought it back in July 2026 only in the European Economic Area. In India, use the ChatGPT app or website.
Is Meta AI on WhatsApp free? Yes. It is built into WhatsApp at no cost. Chat with it directly, or type @Meta AI in any chat.
What is the difference between a WhatsApp chatbot and a WhatsApp AI agent? A chatbot answers inside the chat. An agent also does the work outside it: books, orders, files a complaint or sets a reminder, asks before it acts, and comes back with the result.
Are the “ChatGPT on WhatsApp” numbers people share real? In India, they are third-party services, not OpenAI. Never share OTPs, PINs, passwords or ID numbers with any of them.
