Loan App Scams in India: Warning Signs and What to Do
A loan app becomes risky the moment it wants more access than it needs: contacts, SMS, photos, call logs, broad device permissions, upfront fees, or pressure through WhatsApp. Be especially careful if the app is sent as an APK or the lender’s company details are hard to verify.
Loan scams are cruel because they combine money pressure with privacy abuse. Some apps are fake from the start. Others lend small amounts and then use harassment, inflated fees, or contact-list threats.
Warning signs before installing
Avoid a loan app if:
- The link came from WhatsApp, SMS, Telegram, or a random ad
- It asks you to install an APK outside the official app store
- The company name, address, and support details are unclear
- It asks for contacts, photos, SMS, call logs, or accessibility permissions
- It promises instant approval without meaningful checks
- Fees, interest, penalties, and repayment dates are vague
- Reviews mention harassment or contact-list threats
- Support works only through chat apps
If the lender is legitimate, basic company details and loan terms should be clear before you upload documents.
Permissions that create risk
Be careful with permissions for:
- Contacts
- SMS
- Photos and files
- Camera
- Microphone
- Call logs
- Notifications
- Accessibility services
- Screen recording
Some apps use these permissions to pressure borrowers by messaging relatives, employers, or contacts.
The upfront fee trick
Some fake loan agents approve a loan and then ask for:
- Processing fee
- Insurance fee
- GST
- Account correction fee
- Disbursement fee
- Credit score fee
- Refundable security deposit
After you pay, another fee often appears. Do not keep paying to unlock a loan from an unverified app.
If you already installed one
Take these steps:
- Stop sharing more documents or money.
- Save screenshots of app name, loan terms, chats, payment requests, and threats.
- Review and revoke app permissions.
- Uninstall the app if it is suspicious or abusive.
- Change passwords if documents or OTPs were shared.
- Tell close contacts to ignore threatening messages.
- Report harassment, extortion, and fraud through the appropriate official channel.
If money moved through your bank or UPI app, contact the provider quickly.
If contacts are being harassed
Send a calm message to close contacts:
A suspicious loan app may send false or threatening messages using my contact list. Please ignore, block, and send me screenshots for evidence.
Do not argue with the harassers. Preserve evidence.
What to send to Kaval
Send the loan app link, APK file prompt, message, permission screen, or payment request to Kaval.
The answer should focus on:
- Suspicious app permissions
- Upfront-fee scripts
- Harassment and extortion patterns
- Fake support numbers
- Evidence you should preserve
- Safer next steps
The short version
Do not install loan APKs from WhatsApp or SMS. Do not pay upfront fees to unlock a loan. Avoid apps that demand contacts, SMS, photos, or accessibility permissions. If you already installed one, revoke permissions, preserve evidence, warn contacts, and report abuse quickly.
