A UPI scam is fraud that uses a UPI app to take money from you, almost always by tricking you into approving a payment you think is incoming. The technology is safe. The one rule that stops most UPI scams

Receiving money never requires your UPI PIN. Your PIN authorizes money leaving your account. That single fact undoes the most common tricks, because almost every UPI scam ends with the same ask: “just enter your PIN to receive the amount.” The moment you are asked for a PIN to get money, you are being robbed.

How UPI fraud works

Most UPI scams turn the direction of money around in your mind. You think you are collecting, but you are actually sending. Scammers achieve this with collect requests, QR codes, and social pressure, wrapped in a believable story: a refund for a cancelled order, an advance for something you are selling, a reward, or a mistaken transfer they want back.

Common types of UPI scams

The warning signs

• Any request to enter your PIN to receive money.
• A collect request you did not expect, especially with refund, cashback, or reward wording.
• Pressure to scan a QR code to get a payment.
• A screenshot as proof instead of money actually landing in your account.
• Urgency: a buyer or caller rushing you to approve before you check your balance.

How to stay safe

1. Memorize the rule. No PIN is ever needed to receive money.
2. Decline unexpected collect requests. A genuine payer can always send a normal payment.
3. Never scan a QR code to receive anything. QR codes are for paying.
4. Confirm money by checking your own bank balance, never by trusting a screenshot.
5. Slow down on marketplaces. Complete the sale only after money is truly in your account.
